Literacy is in crisis nationwide and locally

In Oakland almost eighty percent of OUSD students DO NOT meet reading standards by fourth grade.


Most reading programs currently implemented in our schools do not match the research consensus and brain science. (OR are not based in the science or modeled on evidence of what works)

Structured literacy is based in the science of reading and would reach 97% of the student population.

The five critical pillars of literacy are missing from most instruction.

Research shows that teaching these five pillars - phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, & comprehension - directly and systematically, leads to 97% of all children learning to read proficiently.

When implemented in instruction, ALL children are lifted to literacy and liberation.
